About the duPont Planetarium


duPont Planetarium at the Discovery MuseumA planetarium presents a simulated display of the night sky that allows people to enjoy the wonder of the stars in a comfortable environment regardless of the time of day - or the weather!

The Henry B. duPont III Planetarium at the Discovery Museum features a 10.1m domed ceiling, 121 seats, an array of slide and video projectors, a stereo surround sound system and at it’s heart the Spitz 512 Planetarium Projector. All of these systems combine to produce a unique experience.

The duPont Planetarium shows are informative and entertaining for a wide range of audiences. Each show involves a live 30 – 50 minute audiovisual feature that explores an astronomical topic from an angle that is occasionally humorous or quirky but always educational.

Our Current Shows


Dawn of the Space Age:
Just as the Space Race began, Dawn of the Space Age starts with the launch of Sputnik and includes important Russian space history as well as the American Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle programs. The show transports viewers to the International Space Station, the X-prize winning private space ship and on to future Mars exploration. Be immersed and overwhelmed with this most accurate historic reconstruction of Man's first steps into space. Who were these men and women that took part in these dangerous, heroic endeavors? Witness their drive, their passion, and their perseverance to explore, in this epic realistically animated production.

Two Small Pieces of Glass:
Join two teenage students at a local star party as they discover how the telescope has helped us understand our place in the cosmos. Learn how telescopes work and how the world’s largest observatories use them to explore the mysteries of the universe. Explore the Galilean Moons of Jupiter, Saturn’s rings and the spiral structure of galaxies and learn about the discoveries of Galileo, Huygens, Newton, Hubble and other observational explorers.

The Skies Tonight:
Join our expert planetarium staff as the take you on a fantastic journey through the night time sky as you discover just how much of the universe you can see right from the comfort of your own back yard. The planets, stars and galaxies await you and all you need to do is "look up" at the skies tonight.

Little Star That Could:
Little Star, an average yellow star, searches for planets of his own to warm and protect. Along the way he meets other stars, learns what makes each star special, and discovers that stars combine to form clusters and galaxies. Little Star also learns about planets and our Solar System.

Hubble Vision II: The Hubble Space Telescope provides an unprecedented window on the universe and has made astonishing discoveries - from nearby objects in the solar system to the most distant galaxies at the limits of the observable universe. Join us on a voyage that will take you from our home here in the solar system to the edge of the universe and the dawn of time itself as seen through the eyes of the most famous telescope in history.

Ring World: Stunning Saturn has been visited by the Cassini spacecraft. After its nearly seven year sojourn, the spacecraft will spend the next four years investigating the alluring planet, its many moons, and spectacular system of rings. The Cassini mission also includes a probe sent to land on Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Prepare yourself for exciting discoveries and new views of Saturn to come. (Visit the JPL Cassini site.)

Following the Milky Way: An exciting adventure through the change of seasons. We will investigate the changes in the heavens as our home planet earth orbits the sun. The show also explores the planets, meteors, comets, and the northern lights.
