DEEP IMPACT NASA Mission Inspires COOL COMET Activities and a New Planetarium Show

Deep Impact Craft

On July 4, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft concludes a six-month, 268 million mile voyage to comet Tempel 1 by sending a projectile crashing into the cosmic traveler. The impact should create a stadium-sized crater, allowing scientists to study pristine material inside the comet dating back to the formation of our solar system. Assuming all goes well with the July 4th collision, the Discovery Museum will offer weekly COOL COMET activities each Monday in July, culminating in the opening of a new, DEEP IMPACT Planetarium Show on August 1st. Visit every week and become a COOL COMET expert.

BARBARA ROUX

David Everitt, reporter for the The New York Times, wrote the following about artist Barbara Roux in his November 2003 article "The Island's Woods and Wetlands Are Her Inspiration" - WHEN Barbara Roux grew up in Huntington Station in the 1950's and 1960's, her neighborhood included a farm, a section of woods and a vernal pond. As a child, she loved these places, which were untouched by suburban development. As an adult, she has devoted herself to protecting Long Island's shrinking natural environment while also capturing it in works of art. Ms. Roux makes three-dimensional mixed-media displays using fallen branches she collects in the woods and wetlands around her home in Lloyd Harbor, which is still a habitat for deer, box turtles and red foxes. She also takes photographs of the area. Her work creates a somber vision of Island nature beset by both natural and human forces. This summer visitors to the Museum's Balcony Gallery will be able to get a glimpse into Barbara Roux's world through large-scale photographs featuring a selection of her Northeastern forest site events. ACTS OF NATURE is on display now through August 31st.

New Custom Bot is at the Heart of Robotics Head 2 Head Summer Program

Eureka! We've got it. This is by far the best battle bot base we've ever created. Easy to assemble and super maneuverable, the young inventors enrolled in this week-long program will be able to focus their energy on the creative part - building the weapons and defensive systems needed to survive in head-to-head competition with other kid's robots. To survive, a robot must avoid being shut down by others, while working to shut down the other robots in the competition. Only a few slots remain in this extrordinary program, so sign up today! Robotics Head 2 Head is suitable for children ages 11 and up. The program is being offered July 18 - 22, 2005.

Early Summer Specials Celebrate Interdistrict Programs with Outer Space and Soap Bubbles

ROCK ON MARS

Help celebrate the culmination of another successful season of urban / suburban programs by visiting the Museum on Wednesday, June 29 for K.I.D.S. Family Day ("A Very Bubble - Y - Event") and Thursday, June 30th for T.E.A.M.S. Family Day (featuring a special planetarium show called "Rock On Mars"). Both KIDS and TEAMS are programs run by Discovery educators in partnership with Cooperative Educational Services. The programs are designed to bring urban and suburban students together for joint learning experiences that that build science knowledge and foster positive relationships between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Since KIDS is a kindergarten program, activities on Wedensday will be particularily well suited for younger children, however all are invited to participate on either day. TEAMS focuses on 5th graders, so Thursday's activities will be geared more for older children and adults. We hope you and your family will join us on both days.
