New DEEP
IMPACT Planetarium Show Highlights Successfull
NASA Mission
|
|

|
|

After
172 days and 268 million miles of deep space stalking, the Deep Impact
NASA spacecraft successfully reached out and touched comet Tempel 1. This collision between the coffee table-
sized impactor and city-sized comet occurred at
1:52 a.m. on July 4th. At
the moment the impactor was vaporizing itself by colliding with comet Tempel
1, the Deep Impact flyby spacecraft was monitoring events from nearby.
Details about this exciting mission and background information about the
science of comets are all part of a new show being offered in the
Museum's Henry B. duPont Planetarium. DEEP
IMPACT will be shown daily at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. through the end of August and on weekends thoughout the fall. Come and find out what NASA
scientists hope to learn from this rare glimpse at material unchanged
from the early days of our solar system.

Dobson
Birthday Celebration is an Invitation to Imagine the Universe
|
|

|
|

A
little less than one year ago, journalist Brett Campbell wrote the
following about Sidewalk Astronomy legend John Dobson: "When he
was a child growing up in Beijing, John Dobson
used to lie on his back, gaze upward, and imagine the sky was a vast
ocean below him. If only he could slip the bonds of gravity, he wondered,
how far would he plunge into the sky's endless depths? Mr. Dobson has
never stopped wondering about what lies beyond our home planet.
Possessing a quicksilver wit, a gift for turning a phrase that makes
scientific concepts accessible, and an energy
that belies his nearly 90 cycles around the sun, Mr. Dobson is one of
history's greatest popularizers of
science." On Friday,
September 16, 2005 we invite you to join us as we
celebrate John Dobson's 90th birthday and his incredible contribution to
amateur astronomy. This special evening will include a 7:00 pm talk by Yale Scientist Dr. David Rabinowitz. Dr. Rabinowitz
is part of the team that recently announced the discovery of a solar
system object being dubbed The 10th Planet. Astronomy
displays, refreshments and a Dobson recognition cermony
will bridge the gap between Dr. Rabinowitz's
talk and a stargazing session led by the master sidewalk
astronomer himself, John Dobson. In case of uncooperative weather, the
stargazing will be held in the Museum's duPont
Planetarium. Tickets are $15 per person, with discounts available
for college students, seniors and young people 18 years of age and under.
The event if free for Discovery Museum
members, but advance member reservations are requested. All
proceeds will go to the Leslie E. Birkmaier
Endowment Fund - a new fund formed to support the development of youth
astronomy activities at Discovery.
