Karen Fitzgerald
Earth, Light and Fire

Karen Fitzgerald was born on a dairy farm in central Wisconsin. Her early experiences living closely with natural forces of sunlight, shadow, snow and rain, formed a basis for her work. “I have always felt an extraordinary beauty in the physical world. I interpret landscape metaphorically, merging the real with metaphysical reality, creating a lush, quiet place for viewers.” She believes that the experience of beauty is essentially spiritual, expanding our awareness, uniting sensual, emotional, intellectual and psychic perceptions.

Fitzgerald earned a BFA from the University of Wisconsin and MFA from Hunter College. Her tondo (round) canvases have been shown at the University of Arizona, the Queens Museum and the United Nations. Commissions of paintings and murals include the Kew Gardens Community, Pubic Art for Public Schools, CITY arts, and the Jamaica Ctr for Arts and Learning. Her work is in the collection of the New York Public Library.

In this expanding universe,
everything is leaving everything,
yet there is no center
from which any of this leave-taking leaves;
The middle of every departure
is everywhere.
